About Joel & Louise:

Joel & Louise Schwarz reside in New Westminster, BC, where they study and teach jazz dance together. When Joel started dancing, he immediately became drawn to studying the history of Jazz Dance and Music.  Drawing on his other passion as a professional film maker and overall film enthusiast, Joel began collecting and archiving film clips containing Jazz dance and music.  He is also very privileged to be able to learn and study Jazz in film from a few of the world’s top film archivists. Joel and Louise enjoy spreading their love of classic jazz dance and have taught and performed at events and Classic Jazz festivals around North America.

When Joel & Louise are not studying the history of Jazz, they are promoting live classic Jazz. Together, they put on numerous events including the “Funky Butt Jazz Gathering” and the “Vancouver Jazz Dance Festival”, which focus on bringing dancers and live music together.  Joel and Louise were also the last organizers of live music at Vancouver’ historical “Hot Jazz Club” before it closed in 2006.  Joel is currently a director of the Vancouver Swing Society.

Toe Tappin’ Swing says:

We’re SO excited to be able to bring Joel & Louise back to Calgary to teach! Their dedication to the preservation of lindy hop and jazz dancing as an art form is inspirational.

SWINGSATION WEEKEND III Class Schedule:

Doors open at 9:30am

10:00-11:00am Classic Lindyhop Moves of the Savoy Ballroom
Joel and Louise have spent countless hours studying vintage footage and breaking down moves that were classicly danced in the Savoy Ballroom. Come and learn some classic moves and variations that are completely authentic to the dance!
11:10-12:10pm Lindyhop Breakaways
Want to mix up your lindy hop? Joel and Louise will show you some fantastic ways to break away from the partner connection and mix up your lindy hop with some fantastic separation dances.
12:20-1:20pm Stops from the Savoy!
Stops were another form of a breakaway motion that many Savoy dancers used in their social dancing. You may have learned some versions of stops before, but we guarantee you probably haven’t seen these versions!
LUNCH BREAK 1:20-2:20
2:20-3:20pm Collegiate Shag
The collegiate shag is a partner dance that was made famous in California in the 1930s. It’s fun, light, and can’t help but make you smile when dancing it! This class is sure to be a lot of fun. And, if you’ve already taken any 6-count beginner swing, you can apply a lot of the same moves in a collegiate shag basic.
3:30-4:30pm Savoy Ballroom Partner Blues
This blues class will show you how to move across the floor gracefully with your partner, just like the dancers did in Harlem.
